Statewise Utilisation of ‘Nirbhaya Fund’ less than 50%

A special fund was created in 2013 to carry out projects aimed at enhancing women’s safety and security in India in the wake of the horrific Nirbhaya Gang rape case in 2012. The Ministry of Home Affairs has received nearly three-quarters (74%) of the Nirbhaya Fund, with the Ministry of Women and Child Development coming in second (17%). Even though the number of crimes against women and children in the nation rises every year, only 11% of the total money allocated to States and UTs are used. States and UTs have only used INR 252 Cr. out of the INR 2,264 Cr. that the Union has allotted.
