Following the atrocious Nirbhaya Gang rape case in 2012, a special fund was established in 2013 with the goal of carrying out projects meant to increase women’s safety and security in India. “Nirbhaya Fund” was the name of the fund; the word “Nirbhaya” means “fearless,” and the victim of gang rape was given the pseudonym in order to hide her identity. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has created three schemes in order to provide women in distress with appropriate mechanisms and schematic solutions. “One Stop Centre”, “The expansion of the Women’s Helpline”, and “Mahila Volunteer Police”. The Ministry of Home Affairs also implemented schemes called ‘Emergency Response Support System’ and ‘Central Victim Compensation Fund’. The Centre provides funding to the states through the Nirbhaya Fund, which they then use to fund initiatives aimed at protecting women. According to the Nirbhaya Fund Framework, the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) within the Ministry of Finance (MoF) of the Government of India is responsible for overseeing a non-lapsable corpus fund for women’s safety and security.
