When Hemalata, a farmer from Dhavuluripalem in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, noticed recurring ailments in her body, she assumed the changing weather was the reason. However, she discovered the major contributor to poor health was the chemical-laden foods she consumed. Wanting to rectify this lifestyle, Hemalata wanted to learn about healthy methods for cultivation. Hemalata moved to organic farming from chemical farming after joining the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) initiative. Serving their motto ‘Soil is the foundation of nutrition’, APCNF encourages farmers to adopt locally sourced, environmentally friendly techniques to improve soil health in alternative to chemical-based farming. Hemalata attended the training alongside the community members and learnt about the benefits of natural farming as well as the importance of health, hygiene, and proper nutrition.
