Tribal school students walk 25 km over ‘neglect’, government orders probe

Around 120 students from Basipitha High School, Baripada, walked over 25 kilometers to visit district collectorate to protest poor living conditions in hostel. The student complained about ‘poor quality food’ being served besides other grim issues at the hostel in a government-based school hostel, otherwise known as Ashram School. The protest sparked public attention towards the lack of basic necessities in Ashram Schools. The SC & ST Development department called for an investigation. The district welfare officer Guru Charan Mallick visited the school to assess the situation. The students called for strict action against the school headmaster and other staff who are enabling ‘inhumane conditions’ at the hostel.
