In India, more than one in every five women (22%) gave home births, and one in every three mothers (34%) who went for home births believed that institutional births were unnecessary. One in every 5 mothers (19%) shared that since there were no healthcare facilities nearby and no transportation in place, they delivered at home. 14% choose home births as facilities were too expensive and 8% said that they were closed. 12% mothers shared that they were not allowed to go to a facility to deliver their child. 53% older women birthed at home as opposed to 18% women within the age bracket of 15-24%. 38% uneducated women birthed at home as opposed to 4% highly educated ones. Women from socially disadvantaged backgrounds choose home births 3.5 times more than their economically stable counterparts. Women engaged in seasonal employment went for home births more often than their counterparts who worked all year round. Women who had the knowledge of bank loans and accounts birthed at home less often. Women who knew how to use SMS services and mobile phones also delivered less often at home. Women who had experienced domestic violence used home births more often, than those who did not fall victim to this. Women who were not allowed to visit a health facility used home births more often (23.9%) than women who were not allowed to go alone (19.7%) or accompanied by someone (21.9%).
