Specialized Services and Facilities in Regional Hospitals of Maharashtra

The healthcare system in Maharashtra comprises District Hospitals, Sub District Hospitals, and Rural Hospitals, each offering a range of specialized services and facilities. District Hospitals provide a comprehensive array of specialities, including General Surgery, General Medicine, OBGY, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Radiology, and more. These hospitals are equipped with Intensive Care Units (ICUs) consisting of six beds and additional staff. Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) are also established to cater to low birth weight and premature babies.

To address burn cases, separate burn wards have been sanctioned, each with five beds for males and five for females. District Hospitals, except Washim, Pune, and Malegaon General Hospitals, offer CT Scan facilities for accurate disease diagnosis. Psychiatric wards with ten beds have been established in 23 district hospitals, and Sonography services are available in all district hospitals, women’s hospitals, and general hospitals.

In addition, Sub District Hospitals (SDH) offer specialities such as General Medicine, General Surgery, OBGY, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry. Some SDHs have 100 beds, while others have 50 beds. The rural hospitals, known as Rural Hospitals (RH), are 30-bedded referral hospitals equipped with X-ray facilities, laboratories, and ambulance services. Staffing norms include a medical superintendent, gynaecologist/surgeon, paediatrician/physician, and anaesthetist.

Moreover, Trauma Care Units have been established in hospitals located along the National Highway, providing staff, equipment, and well-equipped ambulances. Currently, 68 hospitals, including 23 district hospitals and 45 SDH & RH, have Trauma Care Units. Each unit is staffed with 15 members.

Overall, the healthcare system in the region ensures specialized services, critical care facilities, and necessary medical equipment across various hospitals, aiming to provide comprehensive healthcare to the population.
