The Right to Education Act 2009 established school management committees in 2009. School Management Committees (SMCs) came into being in an attempt to decentralise the functioning of the school and give parents a role in shaping the school that shapes the future of their child. Half of the members have to be women while 75% of the members should be the parents of the students in the schools. The local authorities and parents of children from disadvantaged groups should also have adequate representation. The chairperson and vice-chairperson should be from the parents while The Ex-official convenor member of the committee should be the head teacher of the school. The SMC creates, implements and keeps track of all the school development programs (SDPs). They are also tasked with the important responsibility of creating awareness about the rights of the child, as mentioned in the Right to Education (RTE) Act. They have to aware the local government, teachers, parents and others of their obligations to enforce these rights. Read more to find out more about the rules and responsibilities of the SMC.
