Safeena Husain grew up in the modest lanes of Paharganj and was almost married off instead of pursuing a higher education, when a family friend showed her the path to academics. Little did anyone know that this pivot would lead her to extend the same magic potion of education to girls from various parts of the country, where a woman’s identity is seldom outside the kitchen. She graduated from the London School of Economics and founded the non-profit ‘Educate Girls’. In her interview she shared that each girl’s success story is a personal triumph for her and an instance of dismantling the patriarchy. These girls are now not only studying but also questioning the age-old oppression of women. She and her volunteers conducted door to door campaigns in villages to identify girls and realised that family sensitisation towards education would be imperative for girls to be able to further their education.
Read more below to know how Safeena embarked on this journey and spread it far and wide, to bring to these girls the freedom that comes with education.
