According to a report from the women and child development ministry of Maharashtra, the situation of malnutrition in children has shown improvement in the three most malnourished districts of the state over the past six months. The districts in focus are Raigad, Thane, and Palghar. In December 2022, the report indicated that 8,661 children were extremely malnourished, while 56,889 were mildly malnourished in these districts. However, the latest report shows a decline in these numbers.
Minister of Women and Child Development, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, provided this information in a written reply to the assembly in response to questions by several MLAs. The December 2022 report highlighted that in May 2022, a total of 9,850 children were extremely malnourished, with 62,151 mildly malnourished. The difference in figures was attributed to the change in leadership, with Eknath Sindhe becoming the state\’s chief minister on June 30, 2022.
Specifically, the report focused on the districts of Thane, Raigad, and Palghar. In December 2022, Thane had 2,583 extremely malnourished children and 21,121 mildly malnourished children. Raigad had 526 extremely malnourished and 3,037 mildly malnourished children, while Palghar had 5,552 extremely malnourished and 32,731 mildly malnourished children.
While the report suggests an improvement in the situation, it is important to continue efforts to address malnutrition comprehensively. Malnutrition remains a significant concern in many parts of India, and sustained efforts are required to ensure the well-being and healthy development of children.
