A Nation-wide Health Survey of Indian Families

The National Family Health Survey 2019-20 (NFHS-5) is a comprehensive study that sheds light on population, health, and nutrition in India and its states and union territories. Conducted by the esteemed International Institute for Population Sciences, this survey aims to provide high-quality data on health and family welfare, enabling the evaluation of ongoing programs and the identification of emerging needs.

NFHS-5 not only builds upon the previous surveys but also introduces new topics like preschool education, disability, access to sanitation facilities, and more. By expanding the scope of clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical testing, this survey provides a detailed understanding of various health indicators. However, it is worth noting that HIV testing has been excluded from this round.

The case study focuses on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where Sigma Research and Consulting Pvt. Ltd. carried out the fieldwork. Through meticulous data collection from over 2,600 households, 2,300 women, and 360 men, this study presents key indicators and trends specific to the region. The fact sheets for individual districts within the islands are also available for a more in-depth analysis.

By setting benchmarks and monitoring progress, this study aids in identifying areas of improvement and determining the most vulnerable groups requiring essential services. Whether it\’s analyzing socio-economic characteristics, healthcare access, women\’s empowerment, or reproductive health, NFHS-5 provides a holistic picture of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands\’ well-being.
