Rainwater Harvesting: Towards Effective Water Utilistaion

Water is a scarce natural resource and with a rapidly growing population coupled with lifestyle changes that lead to overuse and wastage of water, it is imperative now more than ever that we take serious steps towards water conservation in the form of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. Rainwater harvesting is a low cost low maintenance method to store and utilise rainwater, through a system of pipes that can collect and store water from manmade or natural sources of rain, such as rooftops, compounds, rocky terrains and artificially constructed permeable or semipermeable land surfaces. Rainwater harvesting isn’t just a low cost highly effective strategy, it has several other advantages as well. It is eco-friendly, reduces risks of soil erosion and floods, it is an effective irrigation source and helps maintain groundwater levels. The two methods used for rainwater harvesting include surface runoff harvesting and groundwater recharge.
