Water crisis is a direct and disastrous effect of the ongoing climate crisis. Sustainable management of the agricultural sector in the face of climate change plays a crucial role in finding solutions and curbing issues like depleting water resources, land degradation and adverse impact on crop production. To help combat these issues, some actionable strategies to ensure sustainable water management in agricultural development have been devised. With 78% of India’s total freshwater resources being dedicated to agriculture, there is a need to make judicious use of water through methods such as drip irrigation. Designing a policy framework that incentivises farmers to encourage them to use water conservation methods is also an imperative step. The utilisation of ICT and remote sensing in smart irrigation systems has proven to be beneficial in certain developed economies. Some other ways to aid water conservation in sustainable agricultural practices include watershed management approach and usage of solar pumps. Research and Development in the field and conversations to acknowledge and address these challenges will go a long way in helping us sustain agriculture while saving the most crucial natural resource, water.
